Violinist Gwen Laster leads the New MUSE4tet, an improvising string quartet offering 20th and 21st century new works and original compositions as a vehicle for social activism. The quartet will perform their commissioned work, “Black Lives Matter Suite” as well as works from their debut album, “Blue Lotus.” The title track is dedicated to the artistic genius of Geri Allen, “Awakening” composed to poetry of Claudine Rankine’s “Citizen: An American Lyric” originally performed for an anti racism worship service in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The New MUSE 4tet are Gwen Laster (violin), Melanie Dyer (violin), Alex Waterman (cello), and Dara Blumenthal-Bloom (bass). The origin of New MUSE4tet was inspired by the Sandra Bland tragedy. The sadness and anger from this injustice motivated the creation of a single work “Cigarette,” a commissioned work which expanded into a three movements piece with the “Black Lives Matter Suite” forming the central component of the Blue Lotus recording. The project was funded in part by a Puffin Foundation Grant.
