Activist New York
A new exhibit is taking an in-depth look at New York's history as the center of important social movements from civil rights to religious freedom.

Activist New York is the inaugural exhibition in The Puffin Foundation Gallery, which is dedicated to the ways in which ordinary New Yorkers have exercised their power to shape the city's and the nation's future.

FOR THE PAST 27 YEARS WE AT THE PUFFIN FOUNDATION HAVE SOUGHT TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD SO THAT WOMEN, CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE, THE WORKING CLASS AND ALL THE UNDERSERVED PEOPLE IN OUR SOCIETY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND A HAVEN IN OUR FOUNDATION. WHERE HELP OF ALL KINDS IS AVAILABLE TO THEM WITH SUPPORT FOR THEIR STRUGGLES OF THE DAY.

RECENTLY WE HAVE JOINED WITH ALBA TO CONTINUE THEIR WORK, WHICH WAS TO FIGHT FASCISM IN SPAIN, AND TODAY TO DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS. WE ARE PRIVILIGED TO HAVE OUR HONOREES, casino KATE DOYLE AND FREDY PECCERELLI HERE WITH US TODAY TO RECEIVE THE ANNUAL ALBA/PUFFIN HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST AWARD. YOU HAVE BOTH COURAGEOUSLY SOUGHT OUT THE CRIMINALS IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND HAVE DEFIED THE COLONIAL TERRORISTS, SEEKING OUT THEIR NAMES, WHO’S CRIMES OF MURDER HAVE BEEEN SUPPORTED BY OUR GOVERNMENT AND THE MILITARY MILITIA OF THEIR COUNTRIES.

WE WORRY ABOUT YOUR WELFARE. WE HOPE YOUR WORK WILL ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN BRINGING THE STORIES OF THESE ATROCITIES TO LIGHT.

WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT THIS SECOND HUMANITIES AWARD TO BOTH OF YOU.

Theater: O Wholly Night and Other Jewish Solecisms
This comical and wistful one-woman show, commissioned and originally presented at the Jewish Museum, draws reminiscences from writer/performer Deb Margolin’s childhood, young adulthood, and recent years. Expounding on her lifelong fascination with waiting for the Messiah, Deb recalls various incidents over the years when she suspected the Messiah was present, while weaving other definitively Jewish experiences, characters, and Hebrew expressions into the monologue. For all its humor, the play offers some serious reflections on the cost of being different from the majority; those musings linger long after the smiles have ended.

$10.00 suggested donation.

Puffin donation helps Teaneck restart literacy program

"A $120,000 donation from the Puffin Foundation will allow the school district to reinstate a summer literacy and math program that was eliminated this year because of budget cuts, officials said.

'I think it might be one of the largest donations – without a grant attached to it – that we have had,' Schools Superintendent Barbara Pinsak said.

The district has already received $60,000, said Gladys Miller-Rosenstein, executive director of the township-based Puffin Foundation, and Perry Rosenstein, the foundation's president. The remaining $60,000 will be donated in 2012, in time for the program's start in July, Miller-Rosenstein said.

'We thought it was a really needed program, and they have proof that it had been successful,' she said. 'They have had this program before and it had been very helpful to the youngsters. … From listening to what they told us, we thought it was exactly what we would like to do for the school this year.'

The program, which will run for four weeks, will be open to students in Grades 1-8, said Vincent McHale, the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He said he expects about 300 students to participate."
