Here I Stand
Serigraph print
19.5″ x 25.5″

“I imagine that people themselves are collages—amalgams of countless disparate fragments and inputs.  I “remix” my subjects in new and often Afro-futuristic ways, but always drawing from (or challenging) a historical notion.

I strive to capture the contradictions and paradoxes, in particular within black people. I don’t strive for realism, rather to capture the elusive essence not captured by a camera.  I ask myself: “We already know what this person looks like, but what does she or he feel like?”

My process is also intentionally analog. I use old archival documents, not reproductions. My collages are hand made, not digital. My printmaking practice involves making limited edition serigraphs by hand, which for me is the important preservation of a nearly lost art.”

This piece is from our latest exhibition, Conversations 2020.
