SUMMARY:Samuel Gray & Benjamin Nylander present “Comedy & Reverie”
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Events \n \n \n \n Music Concert \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Buy Tickets\n \n \n share \n \n\n \n \n Samuel Gray and Benjamin Nylander’s “Comedy & Reverie” explores wit and wonder through a vibrant program of selections for violin\, viola\, and piano. The comic irony of Korngold’s Much Ado About Nothing\, Schumann’s erratic Märchenbilder\, and Lalo’s wild Arlequin conjure up images of an ensemble of stock characters\, fairy tales\, and fantasies. \nBehind these masks of performance lie the dreamy\, introspective musings of Debussy\, Chausson\, and Reinecke\, a sharp contrast to their extroverted counterparts\, and a window into the source of creativity. As a whole\, these works weave together a vivid tapestry of humor\, performativity\, and poetry. \nSamuel Gray is a New York-based violinist\, violist\, and music contractor. In his performance career\, Sam has shared the stage with many great artists of our time\, including Cyndi Lauper\, Mariah Carey\, Darren Criss\, Titus Burgess\, Alex Newell\, Billy Eichner\, and Kate Baldwin. A fervent believer that music is healing to the soul\, he produces intimate chamber music performances around New York City. Sam performs on a 2014 Samuel Zygmuntowicz violin generously on loan from Jay and Michiko Jones. \nBenjamin T. Nylander is a composer and pianist living in Brooklyn. His work includes collaborations on various film and theatre projects\, a contemporary classical album performed with saxophonist Joshua Heaney\, and an international debut in Harbin\, China for the 2025 World Saxophone Congress. Most notably\, Nylander performs with violinist Samuel Gray\, with whom he founded the Hamilton-Hudson Chamber Music Academy in 2025. He has established a career which includes performances with major symphony orchestras\, solo recitals\, and chamber music. He is a founding member of the Raphael Trio. \nViolinist Kae Nakano\, as a college student\, won third prize in the Romania International Music Competition. She has since established an active career which includes participation in major international music festivals\, performing with such superluminaries as Marta Argerich\, Seijo Ozawa\, and Vadim Repin. She is an active chamber music performer and member of the Albany Symphony. \nCellist Benjamin Larsen made his solo debut in 1999 at the Merryall Center for the Arts\, where a critic for the Danbury News Times called him “remarkably gifted” with “a charming\, warm tone.” He has performed concerti with the Hartford Symphony\, Farmington Valley Symphony\, and Musica Dolce Ensemble\, and has also performed solo and chamber performances in Asia and Europe. He is the founder and artistic director of Concerts on the Slope in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, and maintains an active career as soloist and chamber musician. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Date: Sunday\, May 24 \n \n \n Time: 4:00 PM \n \n Location: \n \n \n 20 Puffin Way \n \n Teaneck \n \n New Jersey \n \n 07666 \n \n \n \n Cost: $10.00 \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n Add to calendar \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n Google Calendar	\n\n \n\n	\n iCalendar	\n\n \n\n	\n Outlook 365	\n\n \n\n	\n Outlook Live	\n\n \n\n	\n Export .ics file	\n\n \n\n	\n Export Outlook .ics file	\n\n \n \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n Rzewski and Mendelssohn 11/9/25\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Play\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n videoTextBlockModalblock_81bf1afa4c589b2b82b273b2a8b6bfe3Title\n \n ×\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Your browser does not support the video tag.\n \n \n \n \n \n Close Popup\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Prepare For Your Visit\nGot your reservations? The piece utilizes creative borrowing from a multitude of different composers and gives the listener the feeling that the music is completely improvised. \nFollowing Jake Hart’s solo piano performance\, jazz guitarist John Hart will perform standards and original music with his trio\, featuring Bill Moring on bass and Andy Watson on drums. The evening’s program will feature selections from his latest album New Mantra\, released last year under SteepleChase Records. The project marks John’s 17th album as leader. \nJake Hart is a pianist and composer signed with Sunnyside Records\, which released his debut album Collage in 2024. The album received praise in Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, where Scott Yanow wrote about how “the two Parts sound spontaneous and bridge the gap between modern classical music and jazz.” In addition\, Jake has also participated in a multitude of international competitions and has performed at notable venues including Birdland Jazz Club\, Mezzrow and the Umbria Jazz Festival. \nA fixture on the New York music scene for 40 years\, John Hart has distinguished himself as a band leader with 17 CDs (including releases on such prestigious labels as Blue Note and Concord) as well as a first-call sideman to the stars\, including a sixteen-year tenure with organist Jack McDuff. Other associations include Lou Donaldson\, James Moody\, Jon Hendricks\, Jimmy Smith\, Brian Blade\, Chris Potter\, Larry Goldings\, Bob Belden\, Rick Margitza\, Javon Jackson and the Maria Schneider Orchestra. A prolific recording artist\, John has appeared on 100-plus CDs as a sideman. \nSuggested Donation: $10\nBUY TICKETS below\, OR call: 201-836-3499 (Must call before Thurs. 6/4 at 5PM) \nIf you cannot pay the suggested donation\, please call 201-836-3499 or email aortega@puffinfoundation.org to ask for free reservation(s).
