“E.G.: A Musical Portrait of Emma Goldman” in Concert!
Music Concert
Puffin Cultural Forum presents a concert of the musical E.G.: A Musical Portrait of Emma Goldman before its revival at Theater for the New City in January 2026.
Starring Caryn Hartglass and Leonard Lehrman, the musical features the life of radical Russian-Jewish-American anarchist and author Emma Goldman (1869-1940). Her famous quote, “If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution,” became a worldwide cry for liberation in the fight against tyranny.
She was called “the most dangerous woman in America” by J. Edgar Hoover, who proudly deported her to Russia in 1919. She returned to the U.S. in 1934, and the musical follows her struggle to obtain a visa.
In this time of encroaching fascism, the question the musical asks is relevant again: is America ready for Emma Goldman, and her fight for “free speech, free motherhood, and freedom from war”?
