This special afternoon highlights the intersection of vibraphonist, composer, and arranger Dan Neville’s jazz background and his deep connection to the folkloric music of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. The performance draws from his years of travel, study, and collaboration in Colombia — including time with the late maestro Diego Obregón — and his continued work as a composer in New York City.

Over the past four years, Dan’s voice has evolved through a blend of jazz harmony, Afro-Colombian rhythm, and the spirit of the American Songbook, filtered through his California roots. The result is a bold set of original compositions and rich arrangements shaped by lived experience across cultures.

A key part of this journey is Dan’s collaboration with featured Colombian vocalist Xiomara Torres, whose voice and deep ties to Pacific Coast tradition bring this music to life with authenticity and soul.

Their collaboration led to Torres’ debut album, La Voz Del Mar which was considered “…a scintillating work…” (Downbeat Nov. 22) and “…a great performance, a five-star performance.” – Jason Marsalis (Downbeat Blindfold Test Jan. 2023)

You will hear airs like currulao, aguabajo, juga, and abozao, paired with intricate horn arrangements and interpreted by some of New York’s finest jazz musicians.

This project reflects the multicultural energy of New York—where folklore, improvisation, and innovation coexist—and presents Afro-Colombian music in a new, elevated form.
