Book Release: Waging Peace
Literary Arts
The Puffin Cultural Forum presents an evening of art, poetry, and music celebrating the publication of Waging Peace: From Vietnam to Volgograd, a new collection of essays, art, and poetry by Jan Barry.
Waging Peace traces Barry’s journey from serving as a GI in Vietnam to co-founding Vietnam Veterans Against the War, joining a U.S.–USSR “Bridges for Peace” delegation that helped ease the nuclear standoff of the Cold War, and participating in numerous Veterans For Peace actions. The book conveys memorable stories of soldiers transformed into peace activists, offering creative responses to seemingly endless wars and threats of war.
The evening features poetry readings by veteran poets and activists Jan Barry, Tara Krause, Walt Nygard, James Yee, and others; music by the Solidarity Singers; and a display of artwork by veterans affiliated with Frontline Arts, including Barry, Erickson, Krause, Nygard, and Yee.
A Teaneck resident and retired Bergen Record reporter, Jan Barry is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry and prose, including Waging Art: Tackling Grief and Trauma with Creative Arts. A U.S. Army veteran who resigned from West Point to pursue writing and peace activism, Barry has served as New Jersey coordinator for the Warrior Writers project and as Poet Laureate for Veterans For Peace. His work has been presented at the Dodge Poetry Festival, the New York Poetry Festival, and the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in New York.
