Community Leaders and Student Activists Discuss Gun Violence in Teaneck

Teaneck, NJ, April 24, 2018 – The Puffin Foundation hosts a public panel discussion to examine the issue of gun control reform and gun violence prevention on Wednesday, May 2, 7:30pm. Activists and community leaders will present practical steps that concerned citizens can take to inform themselves, and be active in making a difference. The event was initiated by Gladys Miller-Rosenstein, Executive Director of The Puffin Foundation, with the purpose of providing a local response to the activism of the Parkland students’ #NeverAgain Movement.

Featured speakers participating in the panel are: Dennis Hirschfelder, President of Bergen County Brady Campaign and Al Michel, Bergen County Brady Campaign’s Coordinator for Concealed Carry Reciprocity Resolutions; Laurence Fine, student at Ridgewood High School representing Students Demand Action Bergen County; Shane Mitchell, Legislative Director for Senator Loretta Weinberg; Laris Mendez Downes and Lisa Cullen O’Donoghue from Moms Demand Action; Barbara Ostroth and Minna Greenberg from the Bergen County League of Women Voters; and Jane Theisen representing Sandy Hook Promise.

BERGEN COUNTY BRADY CAMPAIGN, is the local chapter of the national Brady Campaign which seeks to cut the number of U.S. gun deaths in half by 2025. Based on four innovative strategy that centers on keeping guns out of the wrong hands through broadly engaging campaigns: a policy to “Finish The Job” so that life-saving Brady background checks are applied to all gun sales; to “Stop Bad Apple Gun Dealers” - the five percent of gun dealers that supply 90 percent of all crime guns; and to lead a new national conversation and change social norms around the real dangers of guns in the home, to prevent the homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings that happen every day as a result.

LAURENCE FINE is a freshman at Ridgewood High School and a member of Students Demand Action Bergen County. He was one of the organizers for the Town Hall For Our Lives event in Ridgewood on April 7th, and the National Day of Action rally held at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood on April 20th. He runs a politically themed Instagram account @Democrats_for_2020 and was profiled by the New Jersey Jewish Standard.

SHANE MITCHELL works as the Legislative Director to Senator Loretta Weinberg, Majority Leader in the NJ Senate. Having graduated from Princeton University with a degree in History in 2014 and he worked on the Roy Cho Congress campaign before joining Parano and Associates, LLC, a political consulting firm specializing in field work.

MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA was created to to demand action from legislators, state and federal; companies; and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. The group was founded by stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts on December 15, 2012, in response to the Sandy School Elementary School shootings. Moms Demand Action supports the 2nd Amendment, but believe common-sense solutions can help decrease the escalating epidemic of gun violence that kills too many of our children and loved ones every day.

BERGEN COUNTY LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS is local chapter of the national nonpartisan political organization, that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. It neither supports nor opposes candidates or political parties. Membership is open to all women and men who subscribe to its purpose.

SANDY HOOK PROMISE is a national non-profit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, the organization seeks to honor all victims of gun violence by turning tragedy into a moment of transformation by providing programs and practices that protect children from gun violence.
