Posters + Politics: The Art of Activism in New York

Political activists in New York, and in cities the world over, have a long tradition of using boldly-designed posters to draw attention to the most pressing political and cultural issues of the day. Despite their uniquely urban form and currency, the stories of New York’s political posters have seldom been told. Join a panel of leading artists for a discussion of three decades of political posters that address life in the city, from inequality in the art world and AIDS to housing and economic justice. This program is presented jointly in conjunction with the exhibitions Activist New York and Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand at the City Museum, and How Posters Work at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Guerrilla Girls, Anonymous Group of Feminist Artists Avram Finkelstein, Artist and Founding Member of the Silence = Death Project and Gran Fury Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Conceptual Artist, Writer, and Educator Seth Tobocman, Comic Book Artist, Co-Founder of World War 3 Illustrated Caitlin Condell, Assistant Curator, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

    Reception to follow!

Co-presented by Cooper Hewitt and co-sponsored by New-York Historical Society, AIGA/NY, VOCAL-NY, ART 21, The Laundromat Project, the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc., A.I.R. Gallery, The Illuminator, Justseeds, and The One Club. This event is presented as part of the Activist New York program series, made possible by The Puffin Foundation.

The Teaneck Creek Conservancy (TCC) has announced the appointment of Alexa Marques as Executive Director. In her new role, she will be responsible for developing and executing the organization’s vision, recruiting and managing volunteers, ensuring proper maintenance and physical oversight of the conservancy’s property and will oversee all aspects of the organization’s financial management.

Prior to joining the TCC, Ms. Marques was the Assistant Summer Camp Director and Environmental Educator at the Tenafly Nature Center, where she was responsible for developing curriculum for the center’s summer camps and educating groups of children, pre-k through 8th grade. Additionally, in her former role as Newark Youth Leadership Project Coordinator at the Greater Newark Conservancy, she was responsible for the day-to-day coordination of 50 high school interns, 10 college-aged interns and the profitable Youth Farm Stand.

“I am very excited to be joining the TCC team,” noted Ms. Marques. “I look forward to leading the Teaneck Creek Conservancy’s mission to offer a unique environmental, educational and artistic haven for Northern New Jersey.”

Ms. Marques earned her B.A. from Ramapo College, where she concentrated her studies on environmental science and public policy.

“We are elated to welcome Alexa to the TCC”, says President of the Board of Trustees Adam Strobel, “Her passion and exemplary work ethic will make her an excellent addition to our organization.”

    About Teaneck Creek Conservancy
The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a member-supported, non-profit organization dedicated to the reclamation and protection of Bergen County’s Teaneck Creek Park. Since 2001, the TCC has been working hard to transform once-neglected parkland into a place of natural beauty. In a unique collaboration between public and non-profit partners, and hundreds of hours of sweat equity, these 46 acres have been transformed into a small urban paradise complete with almost two miles of groomed trails, an Outdoor Classroom for learning, and even a Peace Labyrinth for quiet reflection. More information about the TCC can be found at www.teaneckcreek.org.

The Puffin Foundation is a proud supporter of the Teaneck Creek Conservancy. The Conservancy’s new office is located at the Puffin Foundation, 20 Puffin Way, and is open during normal office hours.

Upcoming summer events at the TCC include, Camp at Teaneck Creek, Batstock, Bergen County Audubon led Bird Walks and Weed Warriors. Additional information about these events can be found on their website and Facebook.
